What causes depression and insomnia?

Research suggests that certain lifestyle factors may cause depression. Working and living in Perth and other major cities is in itself a source of stress. Being retrenched as Perth's mining boom ends, long term unemployment, living in an abusive relationship, social isolation and general stress and anxiety that is not addressed may all lead to a person suffering depression, which in turn may lead to insomnia.

Insomnia

What keeps one person awake at night may not affect another person in the same way.

You may have no trouble falling asleep, but you may find yourself waking throughout the night.

If you do suffer from insomnia you may benefit from having a regular bedtime routine. While this may not solve the underlying cause of insomnia it may help you gain much needed rest.

Try and go to bed at the same time each night.

Follow the same routine wherever possible.

Avoid or limit the amount of time spent in front of technology before you go to bed - computers, tablets, television and telephones can all impact on the quality of our sleep and may interrupt our sleeping patterns if we have technology in our bedrooms during our sleeping times.

As we said, these may not solve the underlying cause of the problem, it may prevent the insomnia becoming worse.
