11. I am afraid of needles – does acupuncture hurt?
In acupuncture, the needles we use are much thinner than the syringe needles you are most likely familiar with. Syringe needles are hollow because they need to deliver medicines and fluids to the body, or extract fluids consequently the injection sites tend to be larger and may cause some discomfort.
The needles we use in Acupuncture are like a strong flexible thread, and range in size from 0.12mm to 0.35mm. Because of the fine diameter of the needle you are less likely to feel pain at the acupuncture insertion sites, but you may experience the sensation of something reaching the correct point or meridian as your practitioner undertakes your treatment.
