Sciatica & Nerve Pain

Sciatica is the name given to the nerve pain that travels through the lower back, through the buttocks and down the back of the leg and is in Perth, commonly a direct result of a problem in the lower back.

Treating sciatica and nerve pain with acupuncture is extremely effective and government approved

Lower back pain is extremely common in Perth and around the world, but not all lower back pain will lead to sciatica and the nerve pain that is associated with this condition.

Treating sciatica and nerve pain with acupuncture

Treating sciatica and nerve pain with acupuncture is extremely effective. Acupuncture has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a treatment for back pain, and the National Institutes of Health has recognised acupuncture as effective in relieving back pain, including sciatica.

Acupuncture relies on the use of small needles inserted through the skin and into muscles at specific points along our meridian channels. These needles cause micro trauma to the muscles leading to the release of hormones called endorphins. Endorphins help to calm nerve and muscle pain and reduce symptoms of nerve pain and is effective in treating sciatica.

Is my back pain actually sciatica?

Not all lower back pain problems can be labelled sciatica.

Sciatica is a very specific problem that is caused by a nerve being trapped in the lower lumbar region causing pain to travel through the lower back, through the buttocks and down the back of the leg into the foot. If you have ever suffered from sciatica pain you will know the pain can be sharp, severe and last for a considerable length of time until the nerve is released.

Common lower back problems that can cause sciatica include lumbar herniated disc, degenerative disc disease, spondylolisthesis, or spinal stenosis. However, it may also occur as a result of jarring or twisting suddenly causing the pain nerve to get trapped and pinched causing pain.

There are a number of ways sciatica can be relieved, these include:

Acupuncture - Research tells us that acupuncture is twice as effective as standard care when treating sciatica. Designed to target specific blockages, acupuncture can quickly and effectively reach the affected pain site relieving sciatica pain.

Traditional Chinese Massage - One of the most effective ways to relieve sciatica pain is through Traditional Chinese Massage. This targets the specific areas that cause the nerve to become trapped, gently releasing the muscles which in turn releases the pain nerve.

Back strengthening exercises - these protect the nerves by building up the muscles around the problem areas

Stretching - releasing a trapped nerve can be achieved by following a stretching exercise program. If you are not sure how to do this it is best to get advice before beginning.
