Is my back pain actually sciatica?
Not all lower back pain problems can be labelled sciatica.
Sciatica is a very specific problem that is caused by a nerve being trapped in the lower lumbar region causing pain to travel through the lower back, through the buttocks and down the back of the leg into the foot. If you have ever suffered from sciatica pain you will know the pain can be sharp, severe and last for a considerable length of time until the nerve is released.
Common lower back problems that can cause sciatica include lumbar herniated disc, degenerative disc disease, spondylolisthesis, or spinal stenosis. However, it may also occur as a result of jarring or twisting suddenly causing the pain nerve to get trapped and pinched causing pain.
There are a number of ways sciatica can be relieved, these include:
Acupuncture - Research tells us that acupuncture is twice as effective as standard care when treating sciatica. Designed to target specific blockages, acupuncture can quickly and effectively reach the affected pain site relieving sciatica pain.
Traditional Chinese Massage - One of the most effective ways to relieve sciatica pain is through Traditional Chinese Massage. This targets the specific areas that cause the nerve to become trapped, gently releasing the muscles which in turn releases the pain nerve.
Back strengthening exercises - these protect the nerves by building up the muscles around the problem areas
Stretching - releasing a trapped nerve can be achieved by following a stretching exercise program. If you are not sure how to do this it is best to get advice before beginning.
